A Magical Destination

Even as Baja California transforms into an incredible resort destination, traces of the region's storied past still remain. The rugged and beautiful Baja peninsula was once thought to be an island, known simply as California and inhabited by several native tribes.

Part of the legend of the land includes the myth of the mighty Queen Calafia, an exotic ruler described in an early 16th century novel. Not long after the novel was written, the Spanish discovered the area now known as Baja California.

Today, the region thrives as an intriguing cultural center with a rich history and a host of modern-day attractions. From relaxing by the sea to hiking in the mountains to rejuvenating in the desert, the region offers a full array of landscapes to explore. Seaside resorts and villages are a favorite destination for snorkeling, whale watching, sunbathing, horseback riding, fishing, surfing and, of course, enjoying delectable seafood.

The village of Calafia itself is perched high on the rocky shores of the Pacific Ocean. Here, in 1773, the original border between "upper" and "lower" California was established to divide Franciscan and Dominican territories. Now Calalfia is home to charming shops, restaurants, clubs, art galleries, beaches and more.

For even more fun in the sun or cultural immersion, Calafia is ideally located between Rosarito, to the north, and Ensenada, to the south. Rosarito is home to Fox Studios, where blockbusters such as Titanic were filmed, and two incredible golf courses, Real del Mar and Bajamar. While Ensenada offers plenty of museums, artisan crafts and missions.

Journey to the interior of Baja for the famous wineries and gourmet restaurants of Valle de Guadalupe. Be sure to visit in August to take part in the annual wine festival, featuring music, dancing and the best wines of the region.

All of the wonders of Baja California are just a short drive south of the border. Visitors receive a warm welcome, and, best of all, everything from the first-rate dining to dynamic entertainment is reasonably priced.
